India's first astronaut, Wing Commander (retd) Rakesh Sharma, has welcomed the Gaganyaan mission and spoke of how it can beat its initial expectations. Addressing the Tripura Literature Festival, Sharma appreciated the mission's indigenization and importance for the country's space mission. He announced that Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who has been one of the astronauts picked for Gaganyaan, is now in training at the Johnson Space Center of NASA and will return with valuable inputs from the International Space Station. The exposure to space technology there would help boost India's own laboratory in space initiative and be of immense help for the success of the Gaganyaan mission, planned to be launched in 2026.
