Indian lawmakers are intensifying efforts to regulate online gaming, with Tamil Nadu leading the charge through its 2025 Online Gaming Regulations. These rules target real-money gaming platforms, introducing measures such as mandatory Aadhaar-based KYC, restricted gaming hours (12 AM–5 AM), spending limits, and addiction warnings. Minors under 18 are strictly prohibited from accessing such platforms, aimed at curbing addiction and financial exploitation.
While these regulations reflect a commitment to responsible gaming, experts warn of enforcement challenges. VPNs and cross-state access could undermine state-specific laws, highlighting the need for a unified national framework. The industry is also grappling with a 28% GST on bets, adding financial strain.
With India’s online gaming sector expanding rapidly, balancing consumer protection with industry growth remains a critical challenge.
