Tamil Nadu's ambitious "Hut-Free by 2030" program has just achieved a milestone. The state government has completed constructing over 72,000 concrete houses under Kalaignar Kanavu Illam scheme, a giant leap towards transforming rural lives.

Key Highlights:

72,081 houses already built through to June 2025, with thousands more under construction across rural areas.

The scheme is a part of a master plan to build 8 lakh permanent and disaster-resistant houses by 2030, instead of the thatched huts.

₹7,000 crore has been sanctioned under the project with an average unit cost of ₹3.5 lakh per unit.

The scheme focuses on cyclone-affected and economically backward areas, with ₹168 crore being earmarked for reconstruction of natural disaster-hit houses.

Every house has fundamental amenities such as water supply, sanitation, and electricity, with a focus on enhancing dignity and safety for rural households.

The project is also creating jobs in construction and related industries, boosting local economies.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has given the housing drive top priority as the cornerstone of Tamil Nadu's rural development scheme, alongside parallel investment in roads, water supply, and state infrastructure. The pace of development is accelerating, officials say, with new tenders and approvals fast-tracked to reach the 2030 goal.

As the state moves from blueprint to brickwork, the dream of hut-less Tamil Nadu gradually becomes a reality—a house at a time.
