The Patliputra Sports Complex in Patna became a sea of joy as Bihar's girls' rugby team etched history, securing a dominating 22-0 win against Odisha to claim gold in the sport's first-ever appearance at the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2025. This victory is not just a medal; it's a moving reflection of determination, drive, and the change-making potential of grassroots sports programs.

Key Highlights

Bihar's girls' rugby team beat Odisha 22-0 in the final, never giving their opponents an opportunity to score and winning the gold in rugby's first outing at the KIYG.

The win was fueled by three star performers: Anshu Kumari, Saloni Kumari, and Alpana Kumari. All three have tales of overcoming adversity-Anshu, the daughter of a sweet shop owner; Saloni, whose father is a street vendor and who has led India's U-18 rugby team; and Alpana, who fought back from severe injuries to excel on the field.

Ten of the twelve players in the team are graduates of the ASMITA Women's League, a Khelo India initiative to develop young women's talent in Bihar. The league has introduced rugby into the streets of Supaul, Patna, and Nalanda, and given girls a new purpose and identity.

For most of them, rugby was an alien game a few years ago. The ASMITA League gave them a platform, confidence, and a feeling of belongingness and changed their lives, breaking social taboos about women playing sports.

The gold medal represents an entry into bigger things-potential selection to national camps, government employment, and long-term fame. The girls hoped that their victory would bring more support for women's sports and open doors for generations to come.

Bihar's rugby team of boys also won gold, outpacing Odisha in a suspenseful 14-12 game, and registering a double whammy for the host state.

These wins brought the total medal count for Bihar in the KIYG 2025 to three gold, five silver, and eight bronze medals, moving the state to the 13th position overall.

This historic day for Bihar rugby is a clear message: with the right opportunities and support, dreams conceived in the most unexpected places can shine on the national stage. The journey of Bihar's golden girls has just begun, and their story is an inspiration to every young athlete who dares to dream beyond boundaries.
