Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has signed a ₹23.12 billion contract with the Ministry of Defence to supply eight Dornier 228 aircraft to the Indian Coast Guard. The deal strengthens indigenous aviation capabilities, boosts employment through MSMEs, and enhances India’s maritime surveillance and security infrastructure.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the acquisition of eight Dornier 228 aircraft for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) at a cost of ₹23.12 billion. The agreement, concluded under the Buy (Indian) category, was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The aircraft will be manufactured at HAL’s Transport Aircraft Division in Kanpur, reinforcing India’s indigenous production capabilities. The programme is expected to generate significant direct and indirect employment, strengthening HAL’s ecosystem and supporting a wide network of MSMEs and ancillary industries.
Beyond manufacturing, the contract will create sustained opportunities in Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) and life-cycle technical support, ensuring long-term operational readiness of the Coast Guard fleet. Analysts highlight that the Dornier 228 aircraft will enhance India’s maritime surveillance, coastal security, and search-and-rescue operations.
