Shubman Gill is on the cusp of becoming one of the select few Indian Test captains to have tasted success on English soil. Ahead of the five-Test series commencement at Leeds on June 20, Gill is keen to join the list of seven Indian captains to have won a Test match in England, including legends Virat Kohli, Kapil Dev, and MS Dhoni.

Key Highlights:
  • Virat Kohli holds the record for the most Indian Test captain victories in England with three wins (2018, 2021-22).
  • Some of the other Indian captains with English Test wins are Ajit Wadekar (1971), Kapil Dev (1986), Sourav Ganguly (2002), Rahul Dravid (2007), and MS Dhoni (2014).
  • Shubman Gill, 25, is appointed as the Test captain in the place of retiring Rohit Sharma, bringing a new era to Indian cricket.
  • Gill confesses that the scale of the responsibility has not yet sunk in, and he continues, "Honestly, I don't think even my father had envisioned me becoming India's Test captain. And I definitely didn't.".
  • Selectors and captain Gautam Gambhir have, in turn, requested Gill to play his game and captain without any pressure, focusing on a supportive environment for the young captain.
  • England's pace attack is hampered by injury concerns, with Mark Wood out for the first three Tests and Jofra Archer only for the first Test, potentially to the benefit of India.
  • Jos Buttler has only praise for Gill's influence, stating that he can be "the third or fourth most influential person in India after the Prime Minister".
  • Dinesh Karthik cautions that Gill may not yet understand the enormity of leading India in England, but opines there is room with England's poor bowling.

When Gill steps onto the field, Indian spectators will watch anxiously if he will leave his mark alongside legends by leading India to victory in England.
