Hyderabad’s lakes and drains are getting some much-needed attention this July. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has kicked off a month-long sanitation drive, focusing on clearing out waste from water bodies and stormwater drains before the heavy monsoon rains arrive.

Here’s what’s happening:

The campaign, called Safai Apnao, Bimaari Bhagao, runs through July and covers spots like Katora Houz, the Musi River, Banjara Lake, and several neighborhood lakes and nalas.

GHMC teams, led by Commissioner RV Karnan, are out in force clearing garbage, removing silt from drains, and spraying to control mosquitoes. They’re especially targeting areas that tend to flood or collect stagnant water.

Part of the effort involves using drones for fogging and releasing Gambusia fish in select lakes to help control mosquito breeding.

The city is also encouraging residents to pitch in by keeping their neighborhoods clean and avoiding dumping waste near water bodies.

There’s some extra muscle on the ground, too. The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) is working with GHMC to clear illegal encroachments and restore the natural flow of water. So far, thousands of kilos of plastic and other trash have been cleared from places like Peeran Cheruvu and Saroornagar Nala.

The hope is that this cleanup will reduce the risk of disease, prevent flooding, and give Hyderabad’s lakes a fresh start. The results should be visible soon, especially if everyone does their part.
