Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan re-ignited political flames with a scathing jibe at Army Chief General Asim Munir, telling Munir to have gone the whole nine yards and crowned himself as a "king" instead of accepting the field marshal rank. In a video message recorded at the Adiala Jail, Khan condemned what he called the growing influence of the military in the politics of Pakistan as "a mere formality" and a sign of unlimited power, referring to the recent grant of the field marshal rank.

Khan's remarks come against the background of ongoing tensions between his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and the military establishment, particularly after the controversial 2024 general elections and subsequent crackdowns on PTI workers. He accused the military of destabilizing democratic institutions and warned that such conduct would be disastrous for Pakistan's future.

The comment has sparked fresh controversy among political circles, with PTI parliamentarians responding to Khan's reservations and government allies justifying the military's role.
