In a solemn and inspiring ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 22, President Droupadi Murmu posthumously conferred the Shaurya Chakra on Captain Deepak Singh of the Corps of Signals, honouring his extraordinary courage and sacrifice during a counter-terror operation in Doda, Jammu & Kashmir.

Gallantry Recognised: Captain Deepak Singh was awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously for displaying indomitable bravery and selflessness during an anti-terror operation in Assar, Doda, in August 2024. Despite being grievously wounded, Captain Singh continued to fight, ultimately laying down his life to protect his fellow soldiers and the nation.
National Tribute: The award was presented by President Murmu in the presence of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and other dignitaries. The ceremony also saw the conferral of six Kirti Chakras and 33 Shaurya Chakras (seven posthumously) to personnel from the armed forces, police, and central armed police forces for acts of exceptional valour.
Operation Details: Captain Singh, serving with the 48 Rashtriya Rifles, was instrumental in neutralising terrorists and safeguarding his team during the Doda encounter. His actions reflected raw courage and a total disregard for personal safety, embodying the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
State and National Pride: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami paid heartfelt tribute to Captain Singh, describing him as a source of immense pride for the state and the nation. The Chief Minister highlighted the impact of Captain Singh’s sacrifice on the spirit of Uttarakhand’s military heritage.
Legacy of Bravery: The Shaurya Chakra is India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award, given for acts of conspicuous courage away from the battlefield. Captain Deepak Singh’s name now stands among the nation’s most valiant, inspiring future generations of soldiers.
