Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal held productive talks with top EU officials to address pending issues in the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) ahead of his Brussels visit next week. Both sides expressed optimism about concluding the long-pending pact by December, aiming to deepen trade and investment ties.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal engaged in constructive discussions with senior European Union officials this week, marking a significant step forward in the ongoing India-EU Free Trade Agreement negotiations. The meetings come ahead of Goyal's scheduled visit to Brussels, designed to give a fresh impetus to stalled talks that have resumed since June 2022 after an eight-year break.
Goyal met EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic and discussed key outstanding issues relating to tariffs, market access, and investment protections. Both sides reaffirmed a shared commitment to redefine and strengthen the India-EU economic partnership, underscoring the importance of this strategic trade relationship. Sefcovic expressed optimism about elevating trade and investment ties to a new level.
On the sidelines of the UNCTAD16 conference, Goyal also met European Commission Vice-President Teresa Ribera to discuss cooperation on sustainable growth and green transitions, highlighting the broader agenda beyond trade to include environmental and climate goals.
According to Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, the trade negotiations have entered their final stages, with a potential conclusion expected by December 2025. The India-EU FTA aims to cover goods, services, investment, intellectual property rights, geographical indications, trade remedies, and sustainable development.
India's trade with the EU reached USD 136.53 billion in 2024-25, making the EU India's largest trading partner in goods. Key negotiation points include duty reductions on automobiles and medical devices, tax cuts on agricultural products, and bolstering the competitiveness of sectors like pharmaceuticals, steel, and apparel.
This intensified engagement coincides with India's broader trade strategy of securing comprehensive bilateral FTAs with multiple partners globally. India-EU negotiations stand as a major pillar of India's global economic diplomacy, poised to reshape its trade landscape in the coming decade.
