In a historic move, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has cleared India's biggest-ever defence purchase agreement of ₹62,700 crore. The deal involves the purchase of 156 indigenously manufactured Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) Prachand from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). These sophisticated helicopters will enhance the combat strength of both the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Army in high-altitude operations.
The LCH Prachand, equipped with twin Shakti engines, is built for extreme weather conditions, able to fly at altitudes above 16,400 feet. Equipped with air-to-air missiles, anti-tank guided missiles, and 70mm rockets, it is a mountain warfare game-changer for Ladakh and Siachen.
HAL will produce the helicopters at its Bengaluru and Tumkur facilities, with deliveries starting in three years. The agreement also focuses on self-reliance, with a plan to attain more than 65% indigenous content during manufacturing. The initiative will engage more than 250 domestic firms and create around 8,500 jobs.
This is a historic step that reflects India's efforts to modernize its military while fostering 'Make in India' in defence production.
