In a massive escalation following the Pahalgam terrorist attack which murdered 26 civilians, including tourists, India launched "Operation Sindoor" on 6 May 2025, against nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The Indian Armed Forces described the strikes as "targeted, calibrated, and non-escalatory," with surgical strikes on infrastructure of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad, without striking Pakistani military installations. The blasts and blackouts were experienced in Muzaffarabad and Kotli in PoK and Bahawalpur and Muridke in Pakistan's Punjab province. India announced the operation as a direct response to the Pahalgam massacre with a promise to bring perpetrators to justice. Pakistan condemned the strikes as an "act of war," with both countries now on high alert and the UN urging restraint to avoid escalation of hostilities.
