The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles will take the groundbreaking step of putting Indian cinema at the forefront with the exhibition "Emotion in Colour: A Kaleidoscope of Indian Cinema" from March 7 to April 19, 2025. This curated selection of 12 iconic Indian films accumulates decades, languages, and genres to present a vibrant showcase of this nation's cinematic heritage.
The selection features poetry that includes "Mother India" (1957), the first Indian film nominated for the International Feature Film Oscar, and contemporary music including "Devdas" (2002), and the evergreen "Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge" (1995). The year 2008 brings with them "Jodhaa Akbar," "Amar Akbar Anthony" (1977), and Satyajit Ray's "Kanchenjungha" (1962) as other interesting options.
Culled together by film-maker Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, the aim of the series is to highlight the evolution of color in Indian cinema and the effect this fragment of cinema had on storytelling. "These twelve films are each a celebration of film art, but together they represent a luscious tapestry of languages, cultures, and colors," said Dungarpur.
This event will not only be of international recognition but also show a remarkable panorama of Indian cinema beyond Bollywood, covering Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, and Manipuri language films - a clear and colourful view for the people of Los Angeles into the kaleidoscopic domain of Indian filmmaking.
