The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) India is an annual four-day event held every February as part of the global GBBC initiative. It engages bird enthusiasts across the country to observe and record bird species, contributing to a comprehensive snapshot of bird populations. The 2025 GBBC is scheduled for February 14-17.
Participants are encouraged to spend at least 15 minutes birding, counting all species they can identify, and uploading their observations via the eBird Mobile App. This citizen science project not only provides enjoyment for participants but also generates valuable data on bird distribution, habitat preferences, and population trends.
The event is coordinated by the Bird Count India collective, a collaboration of various organizations interested in birds and conservation. The 2024 edition saw impressive participation, with over 5,300 birders uploading more than 58,000 checklists and recording 1,036 species, highlighting the growing popularity and importance of this initiative in India.
