In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity and friendship, the High Commissioner of India to Trinidad and Tobago, Pradeep Singh Rajpurohit, formally handed over a major food donation to the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries on May 21, 2025. The consignment—comprising 19,000 kilograms of basmati rice and 12,500 litres of edible oils—arrived just ahead of Indian Arrival Day, underscoring the enduring ties between the two nations.

The donation, sourced from the Haryana State Co-operative Supply & Marketing Federation Ltd (HAFED), is part of India’s ongoing efforts to support food security and vulnerable families in Trinidad and Tobago.
Agriculture Minister Ravi Ratiram welcomed the consignment at a ceremony in Port of Spain, announcing a collaborative strategy to ensure the rice and oil reach those most in need. He emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing food insecurity, stating, “Some families do not know where their next meal is coming from… we are going to work towards improving that.”
High Commissioner Rajpurohit described the initiative as a continuation of HAFED’s global mission to support consumers and farmers, and highlighted India’s broader support for T&T’s agricultural sector—including an upcoming US$1 million donation of agro-processing machinery.
The event also served to reaffirm the deep-rooted cultural and economic bonds between India and Trinidad & Tobago, with the donation timed to coincide with Indian Arrival Day celebrations and a shared vision for future collaboration in food processing and agriculture.
This gesture not only addresses immediate needs but also strengthens the bridge of cooperation and goodwill between the people of India and Trinidad & Tobago.
