The Indian women's hockey team finished their tour of Australia with a gritty 1-0 victory over the hosts at Perth on Sunday, thanks to a winning 21st-minute goal by vice-captain Navneet Kaur. Having lost four in a row-including two games against Australia A and two closely-contested games against the full team-India's defence was under huge pressure but was rock-solid, repelling Australia on numerous penalty corners and showing remarkable composure in the final quarter.
This hard-fought win not only restored pride but also provided a badly needed morale boost as the team moves forward towards upcoming World Cup and FIH Pro League campaigns. Captain Salima Tete commanded a youthful team that had the benefit of playing against world-class competition, with the backline's resilience and Navneet's clinical finishing being the tour's highlights.
