The movie portrays the realities of rural arranged marriages in India and the pressure women are put through by society. 'Sthal' has received several awards, among them the NETPAC Award at Toronto International Film Festival. It was played by novice actors from Somalkar's village, bringing reality to its depiction of rural India.
