The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is set to transform connectivity in Jammu & Kashmir, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates this 272-km engineering marvel on June 6, 2025. Traversing the mighty Himalayas, the USBRL project is a testament to India’s engineering prowess and vision for national integration.
Key Highlights:
-
The USBRL connects Kashmir to the rest of India with all-weather, reliable rail transport, reducing dependence on the landslide-prone Jammu-Srinagar highway and slashing travel time between Jammu and Srinagar to just 3.5 hours.
-
The route features 36 main tunnels (totaling 119.6 km), including T-50—the country’s longest transport tunnel at 12.77 km—and T-80, the iconic 11.2 km Pir Panjal tunnel, overcoming formidable Himalayan geology.
-
The project includes 943 bridges, such as the world’s highest Chenab railway bridge and the first cable-stayed Anji Khad bridge, both inaugurated as part of this project.
-
Modern safety features are integrated throughout, with parallel escape tunnels, cross-passages, advanced ventilation, CCTV monitoring, and firefighting systems.
The Baramulla-Srinagar-Banihal-Sangaldan section is fully electrified, enabling the launch of Vande Bharat Express services from Katra to Srinagar, with regular operations starting June 7, 2025.
The USBRL is expected to boost tourism, trade, and economic growth, while also holding strategic significance for rapid troop and supply movement to Ladakh.
For Kashmir’s 7.5 million residents, the project delivers a long-awaited dream of seamless, year-round connectivity, opening new opportunities for prosperity and integration.
