Kerala is grappling with one of its worst power crises in recent years, as relentless rains and severe weather have plunged nearly 30 lakh consumers into darkness. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is struggling to restore supply amidst widespread infrastructure damage.

Key Highlights:
  • Over the past 48 hours, heavy rain has snapped more than 12,000 electricity poles and damaged 48 transformers across 25 electrical circles, causing extensive outages.
  • Approximately 30 lakh consumers across 18,100 transformer areas have been affected, with the worst-hit districts experiencing prolonged blackouts.
  • As of Tuesday morning, power supply remains disrupted for about 8.6 lakh consumers, despite round-the-clock restoration efforts by KSEB teams.
  • The KSEB has reported financial losses amounting to ₹56.7 crore due to the destruction of infrastructure and emergency repair operations.
  • Substation staff and field teams have been deployed in full force, prioritizing critical services and densely populated areas for early restoration.
KSEB Distribution Division Director Saji Paulose stated that if the rains subside, full power restoration could be achieved by Tuesday evening.
The crisis has highlighted the vulnerability of Kerala’s power infrastructure to extreme weather, prompting calls for urgent upgrades and disaster preparedness.

Consumers are urged to remain patient and avoid unnecessary travel near damaged power lines, as restoration work continues under challenging conditions.
