The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has invited a ₹119 crore tender for the expansion of Shillong Airport, a game-changer for Meghalaya's infrastructure. The expansion includes the runway extension by 571 meters to allow Airbus A320 aircraft, expansion of the terminal building and apron, and upgrading of associated infrastructure. The completion time is expected to be 18 months, with provisions for monsoon delays.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma greeted the project as a "game changer," noting its prospects for boosting tourism, attracting investments, and creating opportunities for the state's youth. He stated, "Improved air connectivity is not just a question of convenience—it is a question of transforming lives and unlocking the economic potential of Meghalaya."
The airport development is part of Meghalaya's larger vision to increase connectivity and tourist activities, in tandem with other projects such as the Shillong Ropeway Project and luxury hospitality developments.m
