In a landmark political shift, South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung has appointed veteran lawmaker Ahn Gyu-back as the country’s first civilian defence minister since 1961, breaking a six-decade tradition of military leadership in the post. This move fulfills a core campaign pledge by President Lee, who took office earlier this month after the ouster of former President Yoon Suk Yeol over a controversial martial law incident that deeply shook public trust in the military.
