Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary IYR Krishna Rao has urged India’s youth and students to actively champion Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), calling it a national movement for sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
-
Launched at COP26 in November 2021, Mission LiFE aims to mobilise one billion people worldwide and make 80% of India’s villages and cities environmentally friendly by 2028.
-
Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) play pivotal roles, with innovative schemes now contributing over 40% of India’s climate change mitigation efforts.
Mobilizing India’s Next Generation
Speaking at a major event proming environmental protection and energy efficiency across south India, Krishna Rao highlighted the responsibility of students and young people in shaping green habits and driving change at the grassroots.
He described Mission LiFE as a shift away from the old use-and-throw attitude, instead advocating for careful consumption, recycling, and the embrace of a true circular economy.
Youth-led action is essential, he noted, not just for personal change but for market transformation and policy advocacy that support the planet for future generations.
Real Impact: From Households to Villages
BEE’s efforts have helped India achieve annual savings of over 50.98 MTOE (million tonnes of oil equivalent), with electricity savings exceeding 306.55 billion units and a reduction in CO₂ emissions by roughly 306.40 million tonnes.
In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, energy conservation programs are making a tangible impact, with targeted campaigns to enhance mindful consumption and energy efficiency in cities like Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Tirupati, Kakinada, and more.
Visakhapatnam stands out as a growing hub, highlighted as a potential model sustainable city for its adoption of LiFE principles across its bustling port and industrial sectors.
Scaling Up: Partnerships, Innovation, and Inclusion
Mission LiFE unfolds in three phases: promoting individual eco-friendly habits, shifting market preferences to sustainable products and services, and transforming public policy to support broad environmental solutions.
The campaign features 75 actionable steps—ranging from water and energy conservation to lifestyle adjustments—that are accessible, measurable, and designed to involve all citizens.
State Designated Agencies, local urban bodies, and national organisations pool efforts, with special outreach planned for southern cities and towns and active involvement of school and college students.
Building Global Leadership
Krishna Rao praised India’s leadership, noting that BEE’s models are now being studied and adopted internationally, and that the monetary savings from these initiatives also build national resilience.
The ex-chief secretary maintains that India, through Mission LiFE, is uniting all segments of society to meet urgent climate challenges and inspire sustainable progress worldwide.
