On Thursday, Minister Narendra Modi kicked off the BJP’s ambitious ‘Mission Bengal’ in Alipurduar, North Bengal, marking a fresh effort for the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. This move sends a clear message to both political opponents and neighboring Bangladesh. In his speech, Modi pointed out alleged corruption linked to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the obstruction of central welfare schemes, and the BJP’s determination to regain its footing after recent electoral losses in the area.
By choosing Alipurduar—situated near the Hasimara airbase and the strategically important Siliguri Corridor—Modi emphasized the region's geopolitical importance, especially with rising tensions involving Bangladesh. Before addressing the crowd, he laid the groundwork for a ₹1,010-crore city gas project, which promises clean fuel and job opportunities for over 2.5 lakh households in Cooch Behar and Alipurduar.
This visit also kicks off a significant media campaign for the BJP, aimed at revitalizing the party’s presence in Bengal and taking on Mamata Banerjee, who is seen as Modi’s toughest rival. Modi made it clear that the contest for Bengal is not just about local governance; it’s also a matter of national security and regional influence.
