West Bengal is gearing up for a major boost in tech infrastructure with the launch of four new IT parks—three located in North Bengal (Kurseong, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri) and one in Chinsurah, Hooghly. This initiative comes on the heels of Siliguri’s three IT parks reaching full capacity, highlighting a strong demand and the state’s commitment to spreading digital growth beyond Kolkata.

Key Highlights:

•  Construction is already in progress for the IT park in Kurseong, while the project in Kalimpong, situated near Deolo Hill, is set to kick off soon; the site for Jalpaiguri is currently being finalized.
•  These parks are designed to create jobs, attract IT investments, and promote regional development in North Bengal, an area that has historically lacked robust tech infrastructure.
•  Bengal now boasts 22 IT parks with occupancy rates between 80% and 100%, all overseen by WBEIDC (Webel), the state’s IT and Electronics public sector unit.
•  The government is also prioritizing the establishment of Centres of Excellence and hardware parks, offering competitive land rates to entice companies.
•  The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) is actively participating in the Kurseong project, ensuring local involvement and quicker execution.

Outlook:

With these new parks, North Bengal is set to emerge as a key IT hub, generating employment and fostering inclusive growth. The state’s strategy to expand beyond Kolkata could serve as a model for balanced digital development throughout India.
