Google has finally launched its muchawaited AI Mode in India, transforming the traditional search experience into a seamless, ChatGPTlike conversation based on its Gemini 2.5 model. Launched at Google I/O 2025, it is the feature's first fullscale global launch outside the United States and is now available through Search Labs in the Google app on Android and iOS.
Key Highlights:
-
Conversational Search: AI Mode enables you to ask complex, multistep questions and receive rich, humanlike responses in return—ideal for researching foreign travel, comparing products, or learning about complicated topics.
-
Multimodal Input: It provides search through text, voice, or images, with Google Lens integration allowing visual search like plant identification or scanning documents.
-
Query FanOut: The website breaks a query into several subquestions, providing more detailed, contextual answers supported by live web sources.
Smart Features:
-
Virtual tryon tools in stores
-
Visualizations of weather, sports, and financial information
-
App integration (with permission) for personalisation with Gmail or Calendar
-
Homepage Highlight: Google highlighted AI Mode with a special animated Doodle on July 1 in lieu of its usual cultural tribute to showcase the feature.
-
Change in User Behavior: Innovators are performing searches that are 2–3 times longer than typical searches, which suggests a shift towards longer, more exploratory searches.
While still in testing stages, AI Mode represents Google's strongest step yet toward rethinking search—not just a means to answers, but as a helper to reason and discover.
