Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), one of the world’s largest shipbuilders, to foster long-term cooperation in shipbuilding, repair, and technology transfer. The agreement marks a pivotal step in India’s ambition to become a global maritime hub and aligns with the government’s Vision 2047 for the sector.
Key Highlights:
- Strategic Collaboration: The MoU focuses on technical collaboration, modular block fabrication, and joint development of large merchant vessels, including LNG carriers and green ships.
- Technology Transfer: HD KSOE will support CSL in adopting Integrated Hull Construction, Outfitting, and Painting (IHOP) systems and other advanced Korean shipbuilding methodologies.
- Infrastructure Boost: CSL plans to leverage its new ₹1,800 crore dry dock in Kochi and expand its International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF) to accommodate large-scale commercial vessels.
- Global Market Access: The partnership is expected to help CSL tap into HD KSOE’s global client base and secure high-value export orders, especially in Europe and Southeast Asia.
- Skill Development: Joint training programs will be launched for CSL engineers and HD KSOE experts, focusing on green shipbuilding, automation, and AI-driven design systems.
- Policy Alignment: The MoU complements India’s Maritime Development Fund and shipbuilding incentives announced in the Union Budget 2025–26.
