The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has released sweeping updates for Aadhaar enrolment and updates for Assessment Year 2025–26, introducing a “One Aadhaar per person” rule and a revised list of acceptable documents. The changes apply to Indian nationals, Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), children above 5 years, Long Term Visa (LTV) holders, and foreign nationals.
The updated framework categorizes documents into Proof of Identity (PoI), Proof of Address (PoA), Proof of Relationship (PoR), and Proof of Date of Birth (DoB). A valid Indian passport is now accepted across all categories. For OCI and LTV holders, documents like foreign passports, visas, and FRRO-issued permits are mandatory. Notably, only the earliest-issued Aadhaar with biometric data will be retained in cases of duplication.
From November 2025, UIDAI will also allow self-service updates for more fields online, reducing the need to visit Aadhaar Seva Kendras.
Key Highlights:
-
New Rule: One Aadhaar per person; duplicates to be cancelled
-
Document Categories: PoI, PoA, PoR, DoB
-
Applies To: Indian citizens, OCI, LTV holders, foreign nationals
-
Online Updates: Expanded self-service from Nov 2025
-
