The Uttar Pradesh Assembly has put an immediate ban on the consumption of pan masala and gutka inside the Vidhan Sabha campus. The ban was put after an MLA was found spitting pan masala inside the assembly, and the Speaker, Satish Mahana, took it as an opportunity to act upon it. The incident happened on Tuesday, which led to debate on how cleanliness and decorum should be maintained in the legislative complex. Offenders of this new rule will be charged a fine of Rs 1,000. The prohibition seeks to implement current prohibitions against tobacco products in government offices, which have existed since 2017 but whose enforcement has been lax.
