In a shocking twist for the highly awaited sequel of the romantic blockbuster Sanam Teri Kasam, Bollywood actor Harshvardhan Rane has gone on record to declare that he would not act in Sanam Teri Kasam 2 if Pakistani actress Mawra Hocane continues to be included in the cast. This revelation comes in the wake of increasing tensions between India and Pakistan due to recent cross-border skirmishes and military action.
Key Highlights:
Harshvardhan Rane, who played the lead in the first 2016 film with Mawra Hocane, posted on Instagram that he would not be coming back for the sequel if the producers kept the same cast. He mentioned recent comments made by Mawra Hocane regarding India as the main reason behind his decision.
The row broke out after Mawra Hocane criticized India's Operation Sindoor, which was initiated in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack. Her remarks, which called the operation a cowardly attack and lamented civilian losses, outraged Indian audiences and artists.
Rane said he respects artists across all nations, but insults aimed at his country are unacceptable. He was willing to lose followers but not on his national upbringing and pride.
The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) reiterated its stance by re-asserting a blanket ban on Pakistani artists working in India and called for national interest to prevail over cross-border collaborations in the film industry.
The original Sanam Teri Kasam, although not a 2016 box office success, was rediscovered with a recent re-release, stimulating demand for a sequel. Nevertheless, following Rane's departure, the future of the film and its casting are now up in the air, with speculation circulating over who might replace her as the female lead.
Social media has witnessed a wave of solidarity for Rane, with his fans praising his stance and reiterating demands for the Indian film industry to stand united in the face of prevailing geopolitical realities.
While the controversy regarding cross-border co-productions escalates, the future of Sanam Teri Kasam 2 remains uncertain, underlining the intricate nexus between cinema, politics, and national sentiment.
