In a landmark initiative to cultivate scientific curiosity and innovation among school students, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has launched the Prayaas scheme for the 2025–26 academic session. Aimed at students from classes IX to XI, the scheme—short for Promotion of Research Attitude in Young and Aspiring Students—seeks to transform classrooms into incubators of real-world problem-solving and creative exploration.
The programme is open to all schools across India, including government, private, aided, and unaided institutions, and encourages participation from both urban and rural regions.
Key Features of the Scheme
1. Objective and Scope
- Prayaas is designed to instill a research mindset in students by integrating science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) into project development
- Students are encouraged to identify local or societal challenges and propose innovative, science-backed solutions
- The scheme promotes inclusivity, allowing students to work individually or in pairs
2. Funding and Support
- Each selected research proposal will receive ₹50,000 in funding
- The grant is distributed as ₹10,000 for the student(s), ₹20,000 for the guide teacher, and ₹20,000 for the subject expert from a higher education or research institution
- Funds may be used for materials, development, and travel related to the project
3. Mentorship and Collaboration
- Projects must be developed under the guidance of a science teacher and a subject expert from a higher educational institute
- This dual mentorship model ensures both pedagogical and technical support throughout the research journey
- Schools are encouraged to facilitate collaboration and provide necessary infrastructure
4. Timeline and Milestones
- Last date for application submission: August 17, 2025
- Screening of applications: September 15, 2025
- Jury selection deadline: September 30, 2025
- Results announcement: October 15, 2025
- Project commencement: October 16, 2025
- Completion deadline: October 16, 2026
- Final report submission: October 20, 2026
5. Implementation and Outreach
- The Directorate of Education (DoE) has directed all schools under the Government of NCT Delhi to actively promote the scheme
- Heads of institutions are required to disseminate information and encourage eligible students to participate
- NCERT has issued formal guidelines and letters to schools to ensure smooth implementation
Impact and Vision
The Prayaas scheme is a continuation of India’s broader efforts to foster scientific thinking among youth, following initiatives like INSPIRE MANAK and National Science Day. By offering structured research opportunities at the school level, Prayaas aims to:
- Empower students to engage in year-long investigations using scientific methodologies
- Build a culture of inquiry, experimentation, and evidence-based reasoning
- Encourage interdisciplinary learning and creativity through STEAM education
- Prepare students for future academic and professional pursuits in science and technology
Real-World Relevance
One of the scheme’s standout features is its emphasis on real-world applicability. Students are expected to identify tangible problems—such as water conservation, waste management, or energy efficiency—and develop feasible, innovative solutions. This approach not only enhances learning but also instills a sense of civic responsibility and environmental awareness.
Conclusion: A Platform for Aspiring Innovators
Prayaas is more than a research scheme—it is a national movement to unlock the potential of young minds. By bridging the gap between textbook learning and experiential discovery, NCERT is laying the foundation for a generation of thinkers, creators, and changemakers. With structured mentorship, financial support, and institutional backing, students now have the tools to turn their ideas into impactful innovations.
