HDFC Life Insurance welcomed its 25th birthday with a series of major announcements, its strong growth and highest-ever policyholder bonus, while concerns regarding profit margins still persist.

Key Highlights:

Record Bonus for Policyholders:
HDFC Life declared its highest bonus of ₹4,102 crore to participating policyholders, which will go to over 21.9 lakh customers. ₹3,232 crore will be paid in the current financial year and the remaining will vest as future profits. The bonus has doubled every four years, a reflection of strong with-profits fund performance and long-term value creation for policyholders.

Resilient FY25 Financial Performance:
  • Net profit increased 16% year-on-year in Q4 FY25 to ₹476.54 crore, and profit for the year was ₹1,802 crore, up by 15%.
  • Net premium income grew 16% YoY in Q4 to ₹23,765.56 crore and FY25 APE grew 16% to ₹15,479 crore.
  • Value of New Business (VNB) increased 13% in FY25 to ₹1,376 crore in Q4, with VNB margin increasing to 26.5%—an increase of 30 basis points over YoY, led by better value realization per policy.
  • Market share of HDFC Life rose to 11.1% overall and 15.7% in the private sector, while assets under management (AUM) rose 15% YoY to ₹3.36 lakh crore.
Operational Strengths
  • Persistency ratios also strengthened, at 87% 13th-month and 63% 61st-month rates, indicating very good policyholder retention.
  • Over 90% of service requests are now handled electronically, improving customer service and operational efficiency.
Margin Pressures Persist: Even as growth remains strong, investors are being held back by falling VNB margins, especially with the product mix trending more towards unit-linked insurance plans (ULIPs) and non-participatory savings products, which are less lucrative. Management is trying to overcome these challenges and maintain future growth through product innovation, cost management, and digitalization.
