Indian Railways is set to undergo a sweeping transformation with the launch of 1,000 new trains over the next five years, aimed at boosting capacity, cutting costs, and elevating passenger experience. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled the plan as part of a broader strategy to position India as a global rail manufacturing hub and logistics backbone.

Key Developments and Infrastructure Push

- The new trains will span regional, intercity, and long-distance routes, with enhanced safety, comfort, and speed  
- India has added 35,000 km of tracks in the last 11 years, matching Germany’s entire rail network  
- Annual production includes 30,000 wagons and 1,500 locomotives—surpassing North America and Europe combined  
- Investment in railways has surged from Rs 25,000 crore to Rs 2.52 lakh crore, plus Rs 20,000 crore via PPPs  
- Passenger safety has improved, with derailments down from 170 to under 30 annually  

Bullet Train and Sustainability Goals

- The Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train, developed with Japanese collaboration, will begin operations in 2027  
- The first prototype is expected in 2026, with IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee contributing to design and research  
- Rail freight is now 50 percent cheaper and 95 percent more eco-friendly than road transport  
- The ministry aims to push rail’s cargo share beyond 30 percent, supporting India’s green logistics vision
