Reliance Power’s subsidiary, NU Suntech, is set to transform India’s renewable energy landscape with the announcement of a ₹100 billion (₹10,000 crore) investment in a groundbreaking solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. This project, the largest of its kind in Asia, will combine a 930 MW solar power plant with a 465 MW/1,860 MWh BESS, ensuring a reliable four-hour daily peak power supply.
The ambitious project will be developed and commissioned within the next 24 months, following the recent signing of a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The solar power generated will be distributed to multiple discoms across the country, enhancing grid stability and reducing reliance on high-cost, fossil-fuel-based power.
NU Suntech secured the project through SECI’s highly competitive Tranche XVII e-reverse auction, winning the largest individual allocation at a tariff of ₹3.53 per kWh. The initiative is expected to create 1,000 direct jobs and 5,000 indirect employment opportunities during construction, providing a significant boost to the local economy and reinforcing Reliance Power’s leadership in India’s renewable energy sector.
