The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced a yellow alert in Hyderabad and several districts in Telangana following heavy hail, rain, and thunderstorm that lashed various areas of the city in the evening yesterday. People from localities including TGPA Junction, Bandlaguda Jagir, Hydershakote, Attapur, Narsingi, Tolichowki, Shaikpet, and Nanal Nagar experienced hail storms, while localities like Madhapur, Miyapur, Kukatpally, Hitech City, Gachibowli, Jubilee Hills, Mehdipatnam, Khairatabad, Nampally, Ameerpet, and Sanathnagar encountered moderate rainfalls.
The yellow warning, valid until May 4, predicts thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds of up to 30–40 kmph over Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Malkajgiri, Siddipet, Hanamkonda, Warangal, and surrounding districts. The IMD also predicts light to moderate rain and thundershowers over the next six days, providing relief from the heatwave that has been hitting the city, with the maximum temperature in Hyderabad dipping to 40.8°C.
But the unexpected rain shower has raised eyebrows among farmers, especially in Khammam, where lakhs of quintals of harvested paddy got wet due to poor storage and tardy procurement, resulting in widespread outrage.
Citizens are asked to be vigilant, as sporadic thunder showers and windy conditions are likely to continue, with partly cloudy conditions and temperatures around 38°C in Hyderabad for the next 48 hours.
