Fifth Gear to Behind Bars: Billionaire’s Lavish Life Skids into Laundering Conviction

Indian billionaire based in Dubai, Balvinder Singh Sahni, commonly known as 'Abu Sabah' and owner of the much-coveted No. 5 car plate, was sentenced to five years in jail for money laundering by a Dubai court. The court also ordered the seizure of AED 150 million (approximately ₹340 crore) of laundered funds, electronic devices, mobile phones, and significant documents pertaining to the case.

 

Sahni, renowned for his lavish lifestyle and the record-breaking AED 33 million purchase of the No. 5 license plate, was arrested after allegations surfaced of fraud and debts exceeding AED 100 million owed to UAE banks. The court’s verdict underscores Dubai’s strict enforcement of financial regulations and serves as a warning to high-profile investors about compliance and transparency.
