Two hikers exploring the Podkrkonoší Mountains in the Czech Republic made a stunning discovery—a treasure trove valued at Rs 2.87 crore, buried deep in the forest. The Museum of East Bohemia, which has taken possession of the find, confirmed that the trove includes 598 gold coins, jewelry, and tobacco pouches, collectively weighing around 15 pounds.
Experts believe the treasure was hidden for over a century, with coins dating back to 1808 and the early 19th century. The collection features currency from France, Belgium, the Ottoman Empire, and Austria-Hungary, with markings suggesting they were minted for use in former Yugoslavia.
While the exact origins remain unclear, one prevailing theory suggests the treasure may have been hidden by retreating Nazi forces fleeing the advancing Russian army during World War II. Other possibilities include valuables buried by displaced Czech citizens after the Nazi invasion of 1938 or Germans fearing expulsion post-1945.
The discovery, made in February, was only revealed last week as museum officials began analyzing the artifacts. Under Czech law, the hikers are entitled to 10 percent of the treasure’s value, making their unexpected find even more rewarding.
