Ruling Court was in charge of his group in the Betfred 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, running powerfully to hold off fast-finished favourite Field Of Gold and claim victory in the colours of trainer Charlie Appleby and Godolphin. Going off at 9-2 joint third favourite, Ruling Court's turn of speed and stamina were in evidence, especially when he held off stablemate Shadow Of Light and outsider Tornado Alert in the final strides.

Buick's choice to take Ruling Court on past last year's juvenile champion, Shadow Of Light, was rewarded when the colt showed the kind of stamina and pace that marks a Classic winner. Appleby took his third 2,000 Guineas in four years, and with Ruling Court's pedigree and performance, the question now is whether he can overawe again in the Derby.
