India’s Ministry of Communications has mandated the pre-installation of the Sanchar Saathi cybersecurity app on all new smartphones sold in India. Designed to protect users from phone theft, fraud, and cyber scams, the app offers tracking, blocking, and fraud-reporting features, strengthening national telecom security and consumer safety.
The Government of India, through a directive by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has ordered all smartphone manufacturers to preload the Sanchar Saathi app on new devices sold in the country. The app is designed to empower mobile users with tools to track and block lost or stolen phones across any telecom network using the unique IMEI number, preventing misuse and potential fraud.
Sanchar Saathi also allows users to report suspected fraudulent calls, SMS, and messages on platforms like WhatsApp. Integrated with the DoT database, it helps flag and mitigate telecom scams, bolster consumer protection, and safeguard digital identities. The app features include checking mobile connections under one’s name, device authentication, and monitoring suspicious international calls.
The mandate ensures the app cannot be removed or disabled by users, highlighting the government’s focus on stronger cybersecurity measures amid rising digital threats. Available in multiple regional languages and supported on Android and iOS, Sanchar Saathi has already crossed millions of downloads, contributing to India’s efforts to combat telecom fraud and improve user security.
