When Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla headed to the launchpad for the Axiom 4 Mission, he had a special song playing in the background: “Yun Hi Chala Chal” from the movie Swades. It’s a choice that feels both personal and meaningful, especially for a moment as big as heading into space.
Here’s what made this playlist stand out:
Shukla is only the second Indian to travel to space in more than four decades, and he’s doing it as the pilot of the Axiom 4 Mission from Kennedy Space Center.
“Yun Hi Chala Chal” is all about moving forward and embracing the journey, which fits perfectly for someone about to leave Earth. The song, composed by A.R. Rahman and sung by Udit Narayan, Kailash Kher, and Hariharan, is a favorite for anyone who loves a sense of adventure.
Each astronaut on the crew brought their own musical taste to the playlist. Commander Peggy Whitson picked “Thunder” by Imagine Dragons, Slawosz Uznański from Poland chose “Supermoce,” and Hungary’s Tibor Kapu went with “Búvóhely.”
The playlist is a mix of different cultures and personalities, which really shows the international spirit of the mission.
Shukla’s choice is also a nice nod to Swades, a film about an Indian scientist at NASA, which feels fitting for his own journey from the Indian Air Force to space.
It’s a small detail, but the music picked by the crew adds a very human touch to this historic mission.
