India’s Gen Z and millennial workforce is rewriting the rules of career success, with learning opportunities, skill development, and purposeful work now topping the list of job priorities, according to the 2025 Deloitte Global Gen Z and Millennial Survey. Unlike previous generations, these young professionals are actively shaping the future of work, demanding more than just a paycheck from their employers.

Key Highlights:

Learning Over Legacy: An overwhelming 94% of Gen Zs and 97% of millennials say hands-on, practical experience is more valuable than academic theory. Weekly upskilling is the norm, with 85% engaged in continuous learning, largely through digital platforms and on-the-job training.

Career Growth is King: Career progression and learning opportunities are among the top three motivators for job decisions, outpacing traditional factors like salary or job security. Young professionals seek agile, purpose-driven roles aligned with new technologies such as generative AI.

Mentorship Gap: While 62% of Gen Zs and 56% of millennials crave active mentorship, fewer than half actually receive it, highlighting a crucial area for organizations to address.

Skepticism About Higher Education: Over half of Gen Zs and nearly half of millennials are dissatisfied with the quality and cost of higher education, with many questioning whether formal degrees alone are sufficient in today’s fast-evolving job market.

Well-being Matters: Mental health and well-being are non-negotiable, with a third of young professionals reporting frequent stress or anxiety—often linked to job pressures.

Call to Action for Employers: To attract and retain top talent, organizations must foster cultures of growth, innovation, and holistic well-being, offering real mentorship and meaningful career paths.
