India took a giant step towards hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Gujarat leading the charge. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) delegation, the Gujarat government, and Union Sports Ministry recently met Commonwealth Sport officials in London to finalize the bid of Ahmedabad. Final bids are to be presented by August 31, 2025, and the host city is to be determined in November 2025.
1. Gujarat's Vision for the Commonwealth Games
The bid is about sustainability, athlete experience, and long-term legacy, not a short-term spectacle.
Gujarat will utilize available space wherever it can, bequeathing a rich heritage to the people of the region.
The government has been building sports facilities in the form of 23 district-level and five taluka-level sports complexes at an expenditure of ₹370 crore.
2. High-Level Engagements in London
The IOA delegation comprised IOA president PT Usha, Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and Union Sports Ministry officials.
Topics discussed included governance standards, transport policy, sustainability, accessibility, and services for athletes.
Commonwealth Sport officials committed full support in bringing Gujarat's bid proposal to life.
3. India's Broader Sporting Aspirations
India's bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games is included in its bid to stage the 2036 Olympics in Ahmedabad.
Commonwealth Games Federation president and CEO visited Ahmedabad earlier this year to gauge the viability of the city.
Gujarat's development of sporting facilities will enhance India's international sporting reputation.
