Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently spoke at the International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, laying out five practical ideas to help countries prepare for disasters. His speech focused on what can actually work on the ground, especially as extreme weather events become more common.

Here are the main points from his announcement:

Education Matters: Modi suggested that disaster resilience should be part of college and university courses. The idea is to train future engineers, planners, and leaders to think about safety and preparedness right from the start.

Learning from Each Other: He recommended setting up a global digital library where countries can share what has worked for them during disasters. This way, everyone can learn from real experiences rather than starting from scratch.

Finding the Money: Modi pointed out that building safer infrastructure can be expensive, especially for poorer countries. He called for new ways to fund these projects so that no country is left behind because of costs.

Helping Vulnerable Islands: Special attention, he said, should go to small island nations. These places are often hit hardest by storms and rising sea levels, so they need extra support and tailored solutions.

Better Warnings, Better Responses: Finally, Modi emphasized the need for strong early warning systems. If people know about a disaster ahead of time, they can take steps to stay safe. He also highlighted the importance of making sure this information reaches everyone, especially those in remote areas.

Modi wrapped up by saying that working together is the only way to build infrastructure that can handle whatever nature throws at us.
