During a recent Breitbart interview, President Donald Trump reaffirmed his position on reciprocal tariffs against India, which will go into effect on April 2, 2025. Trump said, "I think India is likely to be reducing those tariffs significantly, but on April 2, we will be imposing the same tariffs they impose on us."
This is in the wake of on-going trade talks between the two countries. India has made some recent concessions, such as cutting auto tariffs to 70% from 110% and lowering duties on whiskey imports by 50%. Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is at present in the U.S. for negotiations with USTR Jamieson Greer.
Despite all this, Trump continues to pin his hopes on reining in what he feels are injurious trade practices. The looming tariffs may only affect India's exports to America to the tune of up to $7 billion every year.
Both countries are racing against time to come up with a solution that works for both to prevent further escalation of the standoff.
