Early this morning, a powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Nemuro, Hokkaido, Japan, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, which made its potential effect more powerful. There have been no injuries, damages, nor tsunami warnings reported so far.

Just 30 minutes later, a second earthquake measuring magnitude 4.3 was felt in the same off-shore region, further developing the seismic activity. Both of them were affirmed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and continue to be monitored on an ongoing basis by Japanese officials.

Hokkaido lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is a seismically active area with regular tectonic activities. Although the region is accustomed to quakes, this back-to-back shock of tremors has sounded the alarm.

Regional authorities, including the Japan Meteorological Agency, are closely monitoring the situation and have assured citizens that there is no immediate threat felt.

Stay tuned for further developments as the evaluation continues.
