Two Legends, One Screen: De Niro Cheers On Kher’s ‘Tanvi: The Great

In a moment that united cinematic tradition and authentic friendliness, Hollywood legend Robert De Niro attended the New York premiere of director Anupam Kher's Tanvi: The Great. The screening, at the New York Indian Film Festival, was an extremely emotional highlight for Kher, who called the evening the "highlight of my entire career."

 

De Niro, accompanied by his girlfriend Tiffany Chen, took photographs with Kher and the cast of the film, including newcomer Shubhangi Dutt. The two actors last appeared together on screen in the Oscar-nominated Silver Linings Playbook (2012) and came together at Cannes earlier this year, reviving a friendship that found its fulfillment in this surprise display.

 

About the Film

Tanvi: The Great is a musical drama centered on autism that addresses the issue of the suffering of autism, resilience, and identity. It is Kher's comeback to direction after 23 years, since his directorial venture in the year 2002, Om Jai Jagadish. The film has a superb cast that includes Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Arvind Swami, Iain Glen, and Pallavi Joshi.

 

The film had previously been released at Cannes 2025 where it received a mixed response from international audiences. The film is set to be theatrically released in India on July 18.

 

Kher posted his thankfulness on Instagram, saying: "WORLD'S BEST ACTOR HOSTS THE PREMIERE OF 'TANVI THE GREAT' IN NEW YORK! What more can an actor/director pray for? I am still in shock. But then I also say na—'Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai!'"
