Indian government has published draft regulations to delicense lower portion of 6 GHz spectrum band (5925–6425 MHz), providing a huge step towards implementation of Wi-Fi and low-power wireless technology. Neither license nor frequency allotment will be necessary to open or use wireless devices to provide low-power indoor and very low-power outdoor access, provided they adhere to technical criteria and are employed on a non-protection, non-interference, and common basis under the new "Use of Low Power and Very Low Power Wireless Access System including Radio Local Area Network in Lower 6 GHz band (Exemption from Licensing Requirement) Rules, 2025.".
The move will accelerate the rollout of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, will be an advantage for broadband providers, and will fuel digital innovation. Conditions include an indoor power limit for devices and bans on its use in vehicles, boats, oil rigs, and for operating drones. The move has been hailed as a pioneering step by industry leaders, with projected yearly economic gains of over ₹25,000 crore to India.
