Vodafone Idea (Vi) will raise its base 5G plan tariff, making its prices closer to competition from Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. The decision follows Vi adding more 5G spots as it looks to better monetize and enhance the services offered.

Pricing Modifications & Competition
The existing base 5G plan of Vi costs ₹299, much lower than Jio's ₹349 and Airtel's ₹398 plans.

The revised pricing strategy is expected to bring Vi’s rates closer to its competitors, potentially triggering a broader industry-wide tariff adjustment.

Vi’s base 5G plan offers 1GB of data per day, whereas Jio and Airtel provide 2GB daily, making data allowances a key differentiator.

Expansion Strategy & Market Impact
Vi plans to roll out 5G services across major cities in all 17 telecom circles where it holds spectrum by August 2025.

Over 60% of Vi’s 5G phone users in Mumbai, Delhi, Chandigarh, and Patna have already transitioned to the new network.

The company anticipates increased marketing and advertising expenditures to support its 5G expansion.

Financial Challenges & Future Outlook
Vi’s ability to achieve 90% 4G population coverage depends on securing long-pending bank debt financing.

The Supreme Court’s rejection of Vi’s plea for adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues relief has delayed its ₹25,000 crore debt-raise until March 2026.

Analysts warn that Vi may face an annual cash shortfall of ₹20,000 crore, potentially impacting its ₹50,000–₹55,000 crore capital expenditure target for FY25–27.

As Vi makes the adjustment in its pricing, the telecommunication sector observes keenly to understand whether this action will trigger an overall tariff war or merely set the market rate.
