Union Minister Ramdas Athawale was again elected president of the Republican Party of India (Athawale) at a convention in New Delhi on July 22. A seasoned parliamentarian and a vocal Dalit rights activist, Athawale now plans to make RPI-A a national political party.
Key developments during the party convention
Athawale committed to taking RPI-A to national party status in five years
He gave priority to welfare schemes for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, farmers, labourers, women, and economically backward classes
The Election Commission now accepts RPI-A as a state party in Nagaland and Manipur
Athawale demanded grassroot mobilization, urging party workers to intensify organizational presence at city and state levels
Political positioning and strategic vision
As an MP in Rajya Sabha for Maharashtra and Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Athawale offers administration and ideological acumen to the table
His leadership remains informed by Ambedkarite philosophies of social justice and inclusive growth
Re-election is continuity of RPI-A's tie-up with the NDA and also demonstrates aspirations beyond regional politics
Looking forward
Athawale's new mandate comes at a time of shifting political loyalties and rising calls for representation by marginal groups. His policy agenda for national development will largely rest on coalition politics, mobilization of street power, and policy interventions in the spirit of social justice.
