NHPC Commissions 250 Mw Unit Of Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project

NHPC Ltd, India’s leading hydropower producer, announced the commencement of commercial operations for Unit-2 of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project from December 23, 2025. The 250 MW unit is part of the 2,000 MW project, which is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 27,000 crore.

The Subansiri Lower project, comprising eight units of 250 MW each, is India’s largest hydroelectric initiative. Located near North Lakhimpur on the Arunachal Pradesh Assam border, the project is designed as a run of river scheme with pondage on the Subansiri River. Once fully operational, it is expected to generate approximately 7,421 million units of electricity annually, contributing significantly to India’s renewable energy targets.
