Nifty Holds Ground as Traders Wait for US and India Price Numbers

The Nifty 50 opened a touch weaker in pre-market trade this morning, down about 0.09%. It’s a cautious start, coming right after Monday’s strong rally, as traders now shift focus to July inflation numbers from both India and the US.

Yesterday the market had a solid session, with the Nifty gaining over 220 points and the Sensex climbing more than 740 points. Banking, real estate, and auto stocks led the move higher, while consumer durables lagged on the back of soft corporate guidance.

Why the Pause Today

The hesitation is mostly data-driven. India’s inflation is expected to show further cooling, while US data could indicate whether the Federal Reserve might keep rates higher for longer. That combination could influence both FIIs’ appetite for Indian equities and the broader mood in global markets.

Foreign investors have remained cautious, recently selling more than ₹1,200 crore worth of shares, while domestic institutional investors have been consistent buyers, helping support the market.

Levels to Watch

On the technical side, the Nifty is finding support around 24,400. A push above 24,650–24,800 could open the door to more gains, but a drop below support might bring selling pressure back. The India VIX ticked up slightly, showing traders are alert but not overly nervous.

Asian markets were mostly positive this morning, but Wall Street ended lower on Monday as worries about trade and geopolitics kept investors cautious. For today, everything points to a “wait-and-watch” tone until the inflation data hits.
